There are many kinds of ants and identification is key, as treatments can vary.
Below are some of the more common ants in Central Ontario.
Carpenter Ants are large black ants measuring up to 1/2inch or about the size of a finger nail. They can live within the wood and insulation of your home and therefor can become a major structural nuisance.
Pavement Ants are small brown ants measuring up to 1/8inch and commonly found making ant hills on driveways. They can become a problem when they migrate into structures and seek easy food sources.
Acrobat Ants are small, light brown to black ants up tp 1/8inch, characterized by their unique abdomen (butt) that appears heart shaped and have a habit of pointing it in the air when alarmed.
Pharaoh Ants are tiny little, light brown to yellow ants only 1/16inch in size. They can become major structural pests breeding year round when they find warm hard to reach areas.
Fire Ants are small reddish brown ants and can impact the biodiversity of a habitat, by out competing native species and being an overall nuisance with their aggressive stinging behavior. They can really ruin a BBQ party!
